Burglar enters La Porte senior home while sleeping

May 23, 2009

On Monday, May 18th, the home of an 81 year old La Porte resident was broken in to a little before 4:00 a.m. while she was home sleeping. The burglar cut the phone line on the outside of the home and smashed her cell phone when he was in the house. As the burglar went through the home he turned lights on and dumped out drawers. The victim had an actual conversation with the man who was in a ski mask when he entered her bedroom ordering her to stay in bed. He said he needed money for drugs and asked her for cash, gold and silver. He apparently entered through a locked side door that he was able to push in. She is shaken but uninjured.
Here are some tips to secure your home:

•Fit strong locks to external doors and windows, and keep them locked

•Remove keys from inside locks and keep them out of sight, in a safe place

•Fit sturdy deadlocks to all doors.

•Check that your doors and frames are strong and in good condition. As a guide, wooden doors should be 44mm thick or more

•Mark your property with a permanent marker, this will help Police verify who the owner is, if they recover any stolen property

•Fit a door chain or bar and door viewer, and use them

•Don’t hide your spare key in places like the doormat, flowerpot or behind the loose brick – thieves know where to look first

•Leave your lights on and shut the curtains when you are out at night

•Fit outside security lighting, with a sensor, to deter a burglar

•Keep your tools and ladders locked up in a secure place – if it is in a shed, padlock it. Burglars use your tools to break in
