La Porte County TRIAD continues to touch lives with their lifesaving program.
“Project Lifesaver” helps locate adults and children with a wide variety of conditions that are prone to wander. Many people with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease or a related Dementia, Down’s Syndrome, Autism, Mental Retardation/DD, and others are the perfect candidates if they are still living at home with a caregiver.
This May marks the 1st year anniversary for the program. “Having Project Lifesaver in our Community is truly a celebration, stated by Board President, Tricia Poort. We have already seen how successful the program is with our first search and rescue on February 2nd, 2009 approximately 1.5 miles away from his home. The best news was our client was safe and located within the national standard of 30 minutes from the time called 911.”
The program has each participant wear a personalized wrist bracelet. The tracking bracelet releases an automatic signal every second 24 hours a day. If the person wanders away, a specially trained emergency team is immediately dispatched.
Using radio technology, the search and rescue team is typically able to locate the lost person within 30 minutes, returning them home safe to their loved ones. Statistics indicates recorded search times have been reduced from hours or even days to a matter of minutes. The National “Project Lifesaver” program has experienced a 100% success rate.
Research indicates every 71 seconds, someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease. And we are facing the facts with Autism being the fastest growing developmental disability affecting 1 in every 150 births. Children with Autism have no fear of real dangers.
"Project Lifesaver" can give peace of mind for participates and their families. The program in La Porte County has been going strong for a year now. We have had several successful search and rescue missions with 30 minutes and less. Individuals can purchase a radio transmitter wrist bracelet for a one-time donation of $300. For those who cannot afford the initial donation, scholarships are available.
